# July 20, 2026 — Session location sets place of service

> Home Visit sessions now bill as CMS place of service 12, and the Location picked on each charge drives the place of service sent to insurance claims.

## Updates

### Session location now drives the place of service sent to insurance

When a claim is submitted to insurance, the **Location** saved on the charge — not the appointment's location — now determines the CMS place-of-service (POS) code on the claim. This keeps what you see when you create the charge aligned with what gets billed.

**How each location maps to a CMS code:**

| Location on charge | CMS place of service |
| ------------------ | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ |
| Virtual            | **10** (Telehealth in patient's home) — modifier **95** is added automatically |
| Office             | **11** (Office)                                                                |
| Home Visit         | **12** (Home)                                                                  |
| Other or not set   | **11** (Office)                                                                |

**What's changing for you:**

* **Home Visit sessions now bill as POS 12 (Home)** instead of POS 11 (Office). If you previously used Home Visit expecting it to bill as Office, review how you want home-based sessions billed going forward.
* **Virtual sessions** continue to bill as POS 10 with modifier 95 — no change.
* Whichever Location you select when creating the charge is the location that will be submitted on the claim. Changing the appointment's location after the charge is created no longer changes what's billed.

**Who this affects:** clinicians and practice administrators who submit claims through Thrizer (OON Pay and Thrizer Pay).

**What to do:** double-check the Location field when you create a charge, especially for home-based sessions. See [Charge clients](/help/clinician/charge-clients) and [Claims and superbills](/help/clinician/claims-and-superbills).

### CMS place-of-service codes now shown on Location dropdowns

To make it easier to select the right location, the CMS place-of-service code now appears alongside each option in Location dropdowns across:

* Charge creation
* Add Claim
* Charging profiles

The selected value still displays as a clean label (for example, "Virtual") — the CMS code only appears in the picker so you know exactly what will be sent to insurance before you save.
