# Linking or editing insurance

> Add, view, and edit your insurance information in the Thrizer Client Portal so benefit checks, claims, and reimbursement estimates use the right plan.

## Before you start

Use the Insurance plan area in Settings to view or update your insurance information.

## Where to go

Go to:

**Client Portal → Settings → Insurance plan**

You can also reach insurance settings from the Claims page when Thrizer asks you to link insurance before adding a claim.

## Insurance fields

When editing an insurance plan, Thrizer asks for:

* First Name
* Last Name
* Date of Birth
* Relationship to Subscriber
* Primary Holder Name
* Primary Holder DOB
* Insurance Provider
* Member ID

After you save, Thrizer stores the updated insurance information. The Member ID persists when you leave the page and return.

## What the insurance page shows

The Insurance plan page shows your current insurance plan information or an error message if the plan details cannot load.

The page includes:

* Insurance Information
* Edit Insurance Plan
* Save

Like any benefit check, results are estimates — insurance carriers determine final coverage.

## Why insurance matters for claims

Some claim processes require linked insurance. On the Claims page, **Upload Superbill** is only available when insurance is linked to your account. If insurance is not linked, use **Link insurance** to go to insurance settings.

## If your insurance does not link

A failed automated benefit check does not mean coverage was denied. It usually means the insurer did not return enough information through the automated check. Manual verification may still confirm benefits. Support may ask for the front and back of the insurance card and your date of birth.

For the full list of common reasons and what manual verification can confirm, see [Manual benefit checks](/help/widget/manual-benefit-checks).

## What does "add a provider" mean?

The word "provider" can mean different things in Thrizer. If you want to add a provider, select the path that matches what you mean:

* **Insurance provider (payer).** The insurance company on your insurance card. Add or update this from **Client Portal → Settings → Insurance plan**. See [Insurance fields](#insurance-fields) above.
* **Clinician (therapist).** You generally connect to a clinician by accepting their invitation. See [Clinician connections](/help/client/clinician-connections).
* **A provider who is not on Thrizer.** You can still submit a claim for their sessions by uploading a superbill from **Client Portal → Claims**. Client-side superbill upload is available until August 9, 2026. See [Claims and superbill uploads](/help/client/claims-and-superbills).

If you are a clinician trying to add a **clinician or team member** to your practice, see [Team members](/help/clinician/team-members).
