# Checking client benefits

> Use Thrizer's benefit-check tools to estimate a client's out-of-network coverage, see what information is needed, and request manual verification.

## Before you start

Use benefit checks to estimate out-of-network benefits for a client.

## Where to check benefits

Benefit checking has two views, both set up together from **Clinician Portal → Benefits**:

* **Benefits Checker** — the clinician-facing name for the benefits-checking tool inside the Clinician Portal.
* **Thrizer Widget** — the public version of the same tool. A practice can share it as a Thrizer-hosted link or embed it on a website so prospective clients can run their own estimate.

Configuring one configures the other — they are not two separate products.

## Benefit-check inputs

A benefit check can ask for:

* Rate
* Service
* First name
* Last name
* Date of birth
* Insurance company
* Member ID

## What benefit checks support

Benefit checks help estimate:

* Whether benefit information is usable in Thrizer
* Deductible status
* Coinsurance
* Estimated reimbursement
* Estimated out-of-pocket responsibility

<Note>
  Benefit checks and reimbursement estimates help set expectations. Insurance carriers determine final coverage, reimbursement amounts, deductible application, claim approval, and processing time.
</Note>

## Manual verification

A failed or incomplete automated check is not a coverage denial. When the automated check does not return enough information, manual verification may be needed. To request a manual benefit check, contact Thrizer support at [help@thrizer.com](mailto:help@thrizer.com). Support can ask for the front and back of the client's insurance card and the client's date of birth.

If a benefit check cannot be completed through automated or manual verification, Thrizer cannot support claim submission for that client and plan. Self-Pay remains available.

For the full list of common failure causes and what manual verification can confirm, see [Manual benefit checks](/help/widget/manual-benefit-checks).

## Rechecks and a met deductible

Automated eligibility rechecks often report the plan-level deductible remaining and do not reflect the out-of-network payments a client has already made. To avoid silently disabling Thrizer Pay for a client whose deductible is met, Thrizer preserves a previously recorded met deductible across automated rechecks within the same calendar year.

What this means in practice:

* **Same calendar year, recheck shows remaining > 0:** the recorded met value is preserved. Thrizer flags the discrepancy internally for review rather than overwriting the client's status.
* **New calendar year:** most OON plans reset on January 1. A recheck in the new year is allowed to reset the deductible to not met, matching the new plan-year expectation.
* **Payer or plan change:** switching a client to a different payer or plan invalidates the previous OON benefits snapshot. The next benefit check derives the deductible from the new plan, so a met deductible on the prior plan does not carry over.

If you believe a client's deductible status is wrong, request a manual benefit check through **Help → Request Benefit Check** so the recorded value can be reviewed.

## Widget and benefit checks

The Thrizer Widget uses the same underlying benefit-check approach, configured with the practice's services and rates.
