How to explain Thrizer to your clients

Thrizer is meant to alleviate the financial burden of out-of-network therapy and make the complex world of insurance super simple. Therapists find that letting clients know that they have partnered with Thrizer can help convince clients to begin or stay in therapy. Here is some verbiage you can use for your website, Psychology Today profile, emails, and/or calls. Feel free to leverage and edit as you see fit!

Explaining Thrizer on your website — For those who are fully private-pay

I am currently a private-pay, out-of-network provider. While I don’t accept insurance directly, your insurance plan may have out-of-network benefits, which means that they will reimburse you for a portion of our session cost. I have partnered with Thrizer to handle the out-of-network process automatically for you. With Thrizer, you will only have to pay a copay for our sessions post-deductible, instead of paying my full fee and waiting for reimbursements. This typically allows clients to save on average 70% upfront on our sessions. During our intake process, I can help you verify if you have out-of-network benefits and how much your copay would be.

Explaining Thrizer on your website — For those who are in-network with some insurances

I currently accept these insurances: [Insurances]. For all other insurances, you may have out-of-network benefits, which means that insurance will reimburse you for a portion of our session cost. I have partnered with Thrizer to handle the out-of-network process automatically for you. With Thrizer, you will only have to pay a copay for our sessions post-deductible, instead of paying my full fee and waiting for reimbursements. This typically allows clients to save on average 70% upfront on our sessions.

Explaining Thrizer on Psychology Today

I can help verify if you have out-of-network benefits. I use a service called Thrizer that automatically submits superbills for you and allows you to only pay a copay for my sessions, typically saving clients on average 70% of my full rate every session. If you’d like to include Thrizer on your forms, feel free to leverage and customize this language: “By your electronic signature of this form, you authorize Thrizer to handle out-of-network billing (such as benefit checks and claim submissions) and to charge your credit card for services rendered. These charges will appear on your bank/credit card statement as Thrizer.” Optional language: “If you have any billing-related questions, please reach out to Thrizer directly via your Thrizer portal. They will support you through the process.”

Overview: Thrizer Widget

Thrizer allows you to leverage the Thrizer Widget, a practice-specific out-of-network benefits calculator. The Thrizer Widget allows prospective clients to check their out-of-network insurance benefits and estimated costs for your services before reaching out. Why share an out-of-network benefits calculator:
  • Reduce back-and-forth about insurance coverage and therapy session costs
  • Set clearer expectations before intake
  • Avoid inquiries from clients whose benefits are not a good fit
  • Spend less time explaining out-of-network coverage
How the benefits calculator works: The calculator uses Thrizer’s existing benefits-checking logic, customized to your practice. When a prospective client enters their insurance information, they receive an estimate that includes their out-of-network coverage (deductible and coinsurance), expected insurance reimbursement, and estimated out-of-pocket cost for sessions at your practice. Ways to share the widget: Add a link to your email signature, share the link on your website/profile pages/directories, or embed the widget directly on your practice website.

Thrizer Payments vs Thrizer Superbill Uploads

Thrizer offers two ways to help out-of-network clients:

Thrizer Payment Platform

Perfect for therapists who want to offer automatic claim submissions and co-insurance payments. You charge your clients for sessions via Thrizer to automatically submit claims (no more superbills!), allow them to just pay their co-insurance for sessions and skip the reimbursement wait post-deductible. Thrizer floats the rest of your fees, so you still receive your full rate upfront. Standard 3% credit card fee per session — no monthly contracts or fees.

Thrizer Superbill Uploads

Perfect for therapists who want to offer clients a reliable resource to manage their superbills. All you have to do is provide your clients with superbills. Clients create their own accounts and manage their superbills on their Thrizer portal. Thrizer helps clients instantly verify their benefits. Clients upload their superbills onto their portal. After meeting their deductible, clients receive reimbursements directly to their bank account once the claim is approved in a few weeks.

Key Differences

  • Claim Submission: With Superbill Uploads, clients manually upload their superbills onto Thrizer. With Thrizer’s payment platform, claims are automatically submitted each time you charge them for a session (no need for superbills).
  • Payments: With Superbill Uploads, clients pay you in full and wait for reimbursement. With Thrizer Pay, clients can just pay their co-insurance at the time of the session and skip the reimbursement wait after they have met their deductible.
  • Fees: Clients pay an extra $2/session when they submit their own superbills via Superbill Uploads.

Setting up your Thrizer Account

Setting up your Thrizer account is simple and takes minutes. Two basic steps:

Complete your Billing Profile

The Billing Profile consists of 3 distinct sections:
  • Business Information: Your legal business name, entity type, address, and tax ID.
  • Practice Information: Your practice’s name, your individual NPI, and your practice NPI (if applicable)
  • Banking Information: Your preferred bank account for client payments

Add your clients

After you complete your billing profile, add your clients from the Clients tab by clicking “Add Client”. Once you add your client, they will get an email with a link to set up their account. Once your client fills out their insurance information, you both will get a breakdown of their out-of-network benefits.

Your Client Dashboard

Your Clients Dashboard is where you can perform any action or access any information related to your clients.

Adding Clients

Click the Add Client button, type in the client’s name and email. Clients receive an email notification to join the platform.

Client Profiles

Client Profiles have key tabs:
  • General: ICD-10 diagnoses, insurance information, payment method, and charging profile
  • Payments: All payments the client has made through Thrizer and connected payment methods
  • Claims: All claims submitted through Thrizer

Charging Profiles

Charging profiles allow you to input appointment information into a client’s profile so you don’t need to fill out the same information each time you charge them.

Payment Types

Thrizer has 3 different Payment Types:
  • Thrizer Pay: Clients pay their portion of the cost. Only available once they have met their deductible, comes with an extra 5% fee.
  • OON Pay: Clients pay in full and wait for reimbursement. Claims submitted automatically. Default for clients with OON benefits who have not met their deductible.
  • Self Pay: Clients pay in full, no claims submitted. For those without OON benefits.

Diagnosis Codes

A valid ICD-10 (Diagnosis) code is required by insurance companies to approve and reimburse insurance claims.
Linking insurance connects the client’s profile to their health plan, tracks their coverage, and automatically submits claims for appointments. Steps: Go to Clients → Add or select a client → Open the Insurance tab → Click Add Insurance and enter the client’s insurance details. A successful benefits check may include: Out-of-network deductible remaining, coverage amount per appointment, allowed amount, copay or cost difference. All values shown are estimates, not guarantees. Final reimbursement is determined by the insurance carrier after claims are submitted.
Most common reasons:
  1. Incorrect or mismatched information (most common) — even small differences like incorrect member ID, name mismatch, incorrect DOB, or wrong insurance company can prevent linking.
  2. Incomplete response from the insurance plan — plan may leave out remaining deductible, co-insurance percentage, or OON reimbursement details.
  3. The plan does not support real-time benefit checks — some plans time out or return only basic coverage status.
  4. The plan requires a phone call for full verification.
Less common: New or recently changed coverage, mental health benefits handled separately, plan doesn’t provide digital OON benefit details. This does not stop you from using Thrizer. Thrizer may need to verify your benefits manually.

Why didn’t the automatic OON Benefit Check work?

Most common reasons (same as above from clinician perspective):
  1. Incorrect or mismatched client information
  2. Incomplete response from the insurance plan
  3. The plan does not support real-time benefit checks
  4. The plan requires phone verification
If an automatic OON benefit check does not work, Thrizer may need to verify benefits manually. Automatic benefit checks provide estimates based on information returned by insurance plans. Final reimbursement amounts are always determined by the insurer after claims are processed.

Out-of-Network Benefits Cheat Sheet

What are out-of-network benefits?

Out-of-network benefits is coverage provided by a client’s insurance plan for healthcare services received from providers who are not part of the plan’s network. Even if a therapist doesn’t accept insurance directly, a client may have OON benefits that allow them to receive money back on therapy. OON benefits for therapy reimburse on average 70% of the session cost.

Which plans typically have out-of-network benefits?

A majority of PPO plans have OON benefits. Many non-PPO plans also have OON benefits. HMO plans as well as Medicare and Medicaid do not have OON benefits.

How do clients access their out-of-network benefits?

Clients pay the provider’s full fee upfront, submit an insurance claim, and wait for reimbursement. Therapists provide a superbill summarizing sessions, diagnosis, CPT code, and provider NPI. Reimbursement waiting periods average 4-6 weeks.

How are reimbursement rates determined?

Key components:
  • Allowed amount: Maximum amount insurance will accept and reimburse for therapy
  • Deductible: Amount a client must pay out-of-pocket before reimbursements begin
  • Co-insurance: Percentage of allowed amount the client pays after meeting deductible
  • Estimated Reimbursement: Expected payment from insurance

Example

Clinician rate: 200,deductible:200, deductible: 1500, allowed amount: $150, co-insurance: 20% Pre-deductible: Client pays full 200forfirst10sessions(200 for first 10 sessions (1500 / $150 = 10 sessions). Post-deductible: Insurance reimburses 80% of 150=150 = 120/session. Client’s out-of-pocket cost = 200200 - 120 = 80.Youearn80. You earn 200 while the client only pays $80 per session.

How can clients skip the reimbursement wait?

After meeting their deductible, Thrizer lets clients just pay their out-of-pocket cost (co-insurance) for sessions. Thrizer covers the rest and waits for reimbursement on the client’s behalf.

Checking Out-of-Network Benefits

Three options:
  1. Through your Thrizer account — create/sign in to Thrizer, enter insurance info, get instant breakdown of deductible, co-insurance, and estimated cost.
  2. Have a clinician check benefits for you — clinician needs insurance carrier, member ID, date of birth.
  3. Contact Thrizer support — email help@thrizer.com with photo of insurance card and DOB. Breakdown within one business day.

Understanding the Out-of-Network Coverage Summary

Key terms

  • Allowed amount: Maximum amount insurance will consider when calculating reimbursement
  • Deductible: Amount you must pay before OON coverage begins
  • Co-insurance: Percentage of allowed amount you pay after deductible is met
  • Estimated reimbursement: Amount insurance is expected to pay toward a session (estimate, not guarantee)

How your co-pay is calculated in Thrizer

Co-pay = Provider fee − Expected insurance reimbursement + Thrizer fee Example: Provider fee 200,expectedinsurancereimbursement200, expected insurance reimbursement 175. Your estimated responsibility is 25.Thrizersfeeis25. Thrizer's fee is 10 (5% of 200).Estimatedcopaycharged:200). Estimated co-pay charged: 35. All benefit information and co-pay amounts shown are estimated, not guaranteed.

Linking your Health Plan to Thrizer

Steps: Sign in → Open “Me” menu → Account Settings → Insurance Information tab → Enter insurance info exactly as on card. If plan links successfully, you receive an instant breakdown of OON benefits including deductible, co-insurance, and estimated out-of-pocket costs.
Step 1: Set up your practice (under “Benefits” tab) — practice name, session rates. Step 2: Create and customize your link — choose a custom URL slug on the Thrizer domain. Anyone with the link can run a benefits check. No login required.

How Do Benefit Checks Work

The instant benefit calculator uses: insurance carrier, member ID, date of birth. Thrizer retrieves eligibility and benefits data from insurance systems. The calculation follows standard OON rules including deductible, co-insurance, and allowed amount. Estimates may change because insurance plans finalize allowed amounts only after a claim is submitted. This does not impact clinician payments — Thrizer is a standard credit card processor and you will always receive your full rate (no clawbacks ever).

How to Embed the Thrizer Widget on Your Website

Steps: Go to Benefits page → Scroll to Website Embed section → Click Copy Embed Code → Paste into your website editor. Works with Squarespace, Wix, WordPress, Webflow, GoDaddy, BrighterVision, TherapySites, Weebly, Showit, Carrd. Generally: Edit page → Add Embed/Custom HTML/Code section → Paste code → Save and publish.

  1. Request a superbill from your therapist in PDF format
  2. Create an account and verify your out-of-network benefits
  3. Upload superbills via the Claims tab
  4. After meeting deductible, receive reimbursements directly to your bank account in a few weeks
