Rendering provider is always populated on sole-proprietor claims
Claims from sole-proprietor practices (practices with no group NPI in Practice Settings, where the billing and rendering identity are the same person) now always include the rendering clinician’s Individual NPI in box 31 of the printed claim. Previously, when the billing NPI and rendering NPI on a claim were the same Individual NPI, box 31 could be left blank on the printed claim, even though the clinician was correctly attached to the claim internally. Some payers reject a claim with a blank rendering provider or route it slowly. Who this affects: sole-proprietor clinicians, and any practice billing under an Individual (Type-1) NPI without a Type-2 group NPI on file. Why it matters: the rendering provider on the printed claim is what many payers use to confirm who saw the client. A populated box 31 reduces the chance of a rejection or a manual review on claims where the billing and rendering clinician are the same person. What to do:- No action is needed for new claims. The rendering NPI now appears automatically on the next claim built or resubmitted after this update.
- Claims already submitted are not rewritten. If a previously submitted claim was rejected for a missing rendering provider, resubmit it and box 31 will be included.
- If your practice has a Type-2 group NPI you have not yet added, add it in Practice Settings so box 33 continues to bill under the practice. See Settings and profile.
