Before you start
Use this guide when Independence Blue Cross is a required Local / Host Plan for your practice or claim-service location. Nonparticipating NPI registration creates the provider record needed for claims processing. This is not a network application or registration with every Pennsylvania Blue plan. If registration is incomplete, claims can be delayed. Not sure which plan applies? First identify your required Local / Host Plan. Registration is separate from joining a network.Register the applicable NPIs
1
Open professional-provider registration
Open Independence’s National Provider Registration page and follow its professional-provider link.At the registration form, choose Professional Provider. Do not choose Facility/Ancillary solely because you have a group practice.
2
Choose the NPI type
Select Individual for a clinician’s individual NPI or Organization for the practice’s organizational NPI. Independence requires a separate form for each NPI.Your practice coordinates the needed organization and clinician records. Ask Independence to confirm how those records are linked; registering the organization alone is not confirmation that every clinician is registered.
3
Enter the provider information
In the Provider tab, enter the NPI, effective date, tax identification, specialty, and the requested individual or organization information. Prepare the NPI confirmation and W-9 required by Independence.
4
Complete the remaining tabs and review
Continue through Address, Contact, Documentation, and Review & Submit. Follow the form’s required fields and upload requests using your actual information.Review before submitting, keep the confirmation, and ask Independence when the records and required affiliations are active.
